Thrombosis In Cancer Patients

EDM number 669 in 2015-16, proposed by David Amess on 09/11/2015.
Categorised under the topics of Diseases, Health education and preventive medicine and Health services.

That this House wholeheartedly supports World Thrombosis Day in raising global awareness of deadly venous thromboembolism (VTE), blood clots; congratulates the NHS on becoming a world leader in risk assessing hospital in-patients; notes that cancer patients are at particular increased risk, with up to 4,000 cancer deaths per year due to VTE as recorded on death certificates; further notes the All-Party Parliamentary Thrombosis Group recommendations on reducing these risks in cancer patients, notably by increasing clinical awareness, mandating risk assessment of chemotherapy out-patients, ensuring appropriate prescribing of preventative treatment takes place, and patients are provided with essential information; and calls on NHS chemotherapy Clinical Reference Group service specifications to stipulate VTE prevention best practice and for a VTE question to be included in the Cancer Patient Experience Survey.
