Amina Lawal

EDM number 1507 in 2001-02, proposed by Paul Stinchcombe on 26/06/2002.

That this House welcomes the acquittal in Nigeria of Safiya Hussaini, who was condemned to death by stoning for allegedly committing adultery; is gravely concerned, however, that Amina Lawal now faces the same death sentence in Katsina State, Nigeria, for having a child outside marriage; notes that when she was brought before a regional court she had no legal representation; further notes that it is unclear whether the nature of the charge was adequately explained to her; and calls upon Her Majesty's Government to take all possible steps urgently to assist Miss Lawal before her appeal hearing on 8th July.

This motion has been signed by a total of 84 MPs.
