Zimbabwe

EDM number 183 in 2004-05, proposed by Michael Ancram on 25/11/2004.

That this House calls on the Government to implement unilaterally, if necessary, a tougher sanctions regime against Robert Mugabe, his financial backers and those who oppress innocent people in his name; expresses frustration at those governments which openly and covertly provide support to the Government of Zimbabwe; further notes that the continued lack of urgent international action to protect the people of Zimbabwe from the policies of selective starvation; welcomes the efforts of food charities who deliver aid to those who are starving, irrespective of their tribal or political background; condemns the recent clamp-down on non-governmental organisations; deplores the unchecked slide into ethnic cleansing; and calls upon the Government to work to establish an international coalition to bring pressure to bear on Mugabe and to raise itself from inertia and deal effectively with Robert Mugabe to provide a better future for all Zimbabweans.

This motion has been signed by a total of 80 MPs.
