Access To Stonehenge
EDM number 2359 in 2005-06, proposed by Gordon Marsden on 13/06/2006.
That this House recognises that Stonehenge is one of the most important and loved prehistoric monuments on Earth and one of the best known World Heritage sites; further recognises that it is an icon of the country's history, culture and civilisation and a testimony to mankind's creativity, ingenuity and engineering skills; notes that in 1993 the Public Accounts Committee described its presentation and setting as `a national disgrace'; further notes that during the past 25 years various schemes to address the problems at Stonehenge have been proposed and over £25 million of public money has been spent without those problems being solved; further notes that the Government is currently reviewing the published scheme for improvements to the A303 at Stonehenge, which includes a 2.1km bored tunnel to remove the road from within sight of the Stones, which was recommended for approval at a public inquiry; calls on the Government to take up this proposal and resolve for future generations the issue of proper access to Stonehenge; urges the Government to commit to the published scheme for the A303; further notes that this solution is the only option which fulfils the World Heritage Site management plan; further recognises that this solution is the only option deliverable by Olympic year 2012; further notes that by doing nothing traffic congestion along the A303 and surrounding local roads will worsen with potentially tragic consequences; and believes that if nothing is done now an opportunity to serve visitors now and in future generations to Stonehenge and the associated monuments in the area will be lost.
