Offshoring And Digitisation Of Births, Deaths And Marriage Records

EDM number 394 in 2005-06, proposed by John McDonnell on 22/06/2005.

That this House notes the reservations of the Regulatory Reform Committee expressed in its report published in December 2004 regarding the digitisation of births, deaths and marriage records held by the General Register's Office, a division of the Office for National Statistics, currently based in Southport; further notes the Committee's recommendations which demand proper and full scrutiny of the proposed digitisation to ensure the nation's valuable births, deaths and marriages records contract is not offshored by any of the bidders; and therefore calls upon the Government to safeguard sensitive personal information and to ensure that no potential new UK jobs are lost through this proposed offshoring.

This motion has been signed by a total of 99 MPs.
