Future Of The World's Oceans

EDM number 1982 in 2010-12, proposed by Tony Lloyd on 22/06/2011.
Categorised under the topic of Marine environment.

That this House notes that the report of the International Programme on the State of the Oceans concludes that the world's oceans face the imminent threat of loss of species on a scale only comparable with the mass extinctions of the distant past; realises that such a threat to oceans would have equally drastic consequences for land-based life; recognises that the drivers of this potential environmental disaster are man-made, including over-fishing, acidification through atmospheric greenhouse gases, pollution and nutrient saturation from run-off from farming; and calls on the Government to examine the conclusions of this report with urgency and to present practical proposals with equal urgency to the UN and other appropriate international bodies for the reform of the Law of the Sea and the governance of the oceans.

This motion has been signed by a total of 41 MPs.
