Fairtrade Fortnight

EDM number 1137 in 2015-16, proposed by Greg Mulholland on 24/02/2016.
Categorised under the topics of International development and International trade.

That this House welcomes Fairtrade Fortnight 2016, which runs from 29 February to 13 March, and this year's Big Fairtrade Breakfast theme; commends the work done by schools and community and faith groups across the UK in promoting Fairtrade Fortnight; notes the difference made to producers in the developing world when towns and cities across the UK achieve Fairtrade status; recognises that around 795 million people globally are undernourished, and that half of the world's hungry people, nearly 400 million, are estimated to live on small farms, working to grow food for others every day; further notes that the support of Fairtrade helps many farmers and workers fulfil the basic human need of providing enough food for themselves and their families; and calls on the Government to raise awareness and actively encourage local authorities, retailers, businesses and schools to adopt fair trade principles.

This motion has been signed by a total of 45 MPs.
