Diabetes Patient Care
EDM number 2324 in 2005-06, proposed by Adrian Sanders on 07/06/2006.
That this House recognises that diabetes is a major cause of ill-health in the UK, affecting more than two million people; notes with concern that the prevalence of diabetes is increasing, particularly among high risk groups such as those who are overweight and those of black or Asian origin; acknowledges that diabetes is a condition largely managed by patients themselves; further notes with concern that the recent Government consultation on the arrangements for the provision of dressings and chemical reagents may lead to a potential reduction of £19 million in the associated complementary services provided by manufacturers of diabetes testing strips, therefore significantly reducing patients' ability to self-manage their diabetes; and calls on the Government to take urgent steps to reassure patients that any cuts resulting from the consultation will not jeopardise the high quality of diabetes care, products and services currently available.
