Osteoporosis Management
EDM number 473 in 2005-06, proposed by John Austin on 30/06/2005.
That this House is concerned that one in two women and one in five men over the age of 50 years will have a painful bone fracture due to the fragile bone disease osteoporosis; welcomes the Government attempts to deliver integrated falls and osteoporosis services through Standard Six of the National Service Framework for Older People; urges the Government to continue work to implement Standard Six fully in all primary care trusts; further urges the Government to afford greater priority to osteoporosis by including it in the revised Quality and Outcomes Framework of the General Medical Services Contract to improve the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of this disease; notes that osteoporotic hip fractures alone cost the UK more than £1.7 billion a year; and believes that without action from the Government to ensure the implementation of its own measures this figure will rise to at least £2.1 billion by 2010.
