International Physics Olympiad 2012

EDM number 52 in 2012-13, proposed by Valerie Vaz on 14/05/2012.

That this House acknowledges the work of the British Physics Olympiad, which gives gifted young physicists the opportunity to develop their knowledge of physics and compete against their international counterparts at the Annual International Physics Olympiad; notes the achievement of British representatives at the International Physics Olympiad 2011, winning three silver and two bronze medals; congratulates the six British representatives who will compete at the International Physics Olympiad 2012 in Estonia on 24 July 2012; further notes the value of physics to the economy, comprising approximately 30 per cent of the UK's GDP and attracting 40 per cent of investment in the UK; recognises the need to increase interest in the subject of physics following a 35 per cent fall in A-level physics entries between 1999 and 2006; regrets that the Government grant to fund the Physics Olympians has now been cut; and calls on the Government to reinstate this grant immediately to foster the talents of the next generation of British physicists.
